Kate Middleton has revealed that she has cancer following a long absence from the public.
Amid endless speculation about her whereabouts, the Princess of Wales shared that she has been diagnosed with cancer in an emotional video statement posted to social media Friday.
The princess underwent major abdominal surgery in January and has been missing from the public eye ever since, prompting much discussion about where she may have been. The truth, according to her video statement, is that she has been grappling with a cancer diagnosis and early stages of treatment.
“This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” she said in the video.
While Middleton’s abdominal condition was initially thought to be non-cancerous, she said post-surgery tests revealed that cancer was, in fact, present, and she has begun a course of preventative chemotherapy at the advice of her medical team.
“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful,” Middleton said.
The princess asked for space and privacy for herself and her family while she undergoes treatment, adding that it took care and time to figure out the right way to explain her condition to her three young children.
“As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits,” she said. “Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.”
Middleton did not reveal what kind of cancer she is facing. This comes after Buckingham Palace confirmed in February that King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer following routine treatment for an enlarged prostate.
