It is known that after a thunderstorm the air becomes fresh, clean, with a special aroma. People feel better, the mood rises, the heart beats faster, drowsiness passes. Why is this happening? Because during a thunderstorm a new gas is formed – ozone, a more active form of oxygen, which due to its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects is widely used to treat many diseases.

Ozone – medical “super oxygen”

People have long known that they cannot live without oxygen and must constantly supply themselves with it. To do this, we inhale about 10,000 litres of air every day. Oxygen is needed by healthy body cells, saturating them with energy. Lack of oxygen leads to fatigue, disease, immune system disorders, accelerated ageing. And it has long been noticed that ozone is a kind of “super oxygen” that can be used for treatment (1).

The official discovery of ozone (1840) is associated with the name of Christian Friedrich Schenbein – a German scientist, professor at the University of Basel (Switzerland). And the use of ozone in medicine dates back to the United States in 1885. Before World War II, the epicentre of medical ozone moved to Europe: Switzerland, Italy, France, and especially Germany. There were many clinics and institutes in each country, where thousands of patients were treated annually with ozone therapy.

Today, ozone therapy is a unique non-drug method of treatment with an ozone-oxygen mixture, in which oxygen is additionally introduced into the body bypassing the lungs (2). The addition of ozone to oxygen creates a cure that has such an effective and versatile effect that no drug can match. Chemically, ozone (O3) is a gas with a characteristic odour. It is a type of oxygen, which molecule consists of 3 atoms in contrast to the oxygen we breathe, the molecule of which contains 2 atoms (O2). The triatomic molecule of ozone provides its greater activity in attachment to living cells and high ability to oxidize. Ozone introduced into the body contributes to a significant oxygen saturation of blood and tissues. Since ozone is an active form of oxygen, it fights many toxins, bacteria (3), viruses, destroying them along with diseased and defective cells, protecting us from disease (4).

Problems that ozone therapy successfully copes with

There are a lot of investigations of ozone influence on the human body (5). Now we have evidence that ozone therapy helps to overcome many different pathological conditions:

Such therapy allows improving the body’s resistance to external adverse manifestations naturally by increasing internal resources. Today, ozone therapy as a type of physiotherapy is widely used in many areas of medicine: cosmetology, gynecology, dermatology, surgery, therapy, urology, neurology, ophthalmology, and more.  This way, ozone therapy can be used to treat: cardiovascular diseases caused by low oxygen levels in the heart muscle, hypertension, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory processes in the colon and rectum, liver disease, chronic fatigue, diabetes, arthropathy, oncology (6).

Ozone is the best helper for the heart, blood vessels, and nerve system

It is known that human health largely depends on the condition of blood vessels and blood composition. At ozone therapy the blood becomes more saturated with oxygen, its elements qualitatively improve: erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes. Ozone has a dilating effect on blood vessels, especially capillaries (7). All this provides an increased supply of oxygen and nutrients to organs and tissues. Therefore, ozone therapy is effective in diseases associated with vascular damage, circulatory disorders, and lack of oxygen – coronary heart disease, vascular sclerosis of the brain and lower extremities, neurodegenerative disorders (8).

Diabetes is not a verdict

Diabetes is a very common and insidious disease, dangerous with its complications. The fact is that 10% of patients later have serious vision problems, and 2% go blind altogether. More than half of the patients develop “diabetic foot syndrome” (9). Myocardial infarctions and strokes are common. In addition, they suffer from immunity and often develop abscesses, pyelonephritis, lung disease, etc. At the heart of damage to the eyes, nervous system, lower extremities are changes in the smallest vessels with their narrowing and malnutrition of vital organs, as well as due to lack of oxygen. Under the influence of excess sugar changes the quality of blood. Hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the blood to the tissues, is “glycosylated” and impairs oxygen transfer. Improving blood circulation and oxygen supply, ozone therapy is one of the best methods to prevent the development of complications of diabetes – cataracts, angiopathy, arthropathy, and others (10).

Ozone anti-ageing

Due to age-related changes, especially in blood vessels, chronic oxygen deficiency increases. This is especially true of the brain, which uses the most oxygen. Making up 2% of the total body weight requires 20% of the oxygen consumed by our body. Hence the decrease in memory, efficiency, physical activity, organ dysfunction appear. Ozone therapy eliminates oxygen deficiency, increases energy metabolism in tissues, restores the normal functioning of organs and systems. Patients again feel energetic, able to work, strengthened (11).

Ozone in diseases of the joints

With age, degenerative changes develop in the cartilaginous tissue of the spine and the joints, mainly the knees. They are manifested in pain, restrict patients in walking, movement, difficulty performing daily work. Periarticular and intra-articular administration of ozone-oxygen mixtures due to the pronounced anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects relieve patients from pain, make them active, return to normal work (12).

If the immunity is weakened

By increasing energy, ozone primarily raises the energy of the immune system and increases the body’s defences. Therefore, ozone therapy helps to treat diseases caused by impaired immune responses – asthma, rheumatoid arthritis. Ozone is a good help in the treatment of many chronic diseases because they are always a consequence of secondary immunodeficiency (13).

Particular emphasis should be placed on the effectiveness of ozone in children that are often and for a long time ill, who are treated in the form of ozone insufflations.

The use of ozone in gynecology

A real panacea can be ozone therapy to maintain the health of expectant mothers who are contraindicated in potent medications and procedures (14). Ozonation of blood in early pregnancy prevents toxicosis, and in later – anemia in women and hypoxia of the unborn baby, fights infection, helps the mother to recover after childbirth.

In general, ozone therapy in gynecology is used in the treatment of many diseases, such as:

And in obstetrics, ozone therapy makes it possible to saturate the blood with oxygen to increase the blood supply to the placenta and fetus (14). Such physiotherapy normalizes hormone-producing processes, regulates cell metabolism and immunity.

Ozone therapy against viruses

It is known that tap water, which we drink, at one stage is purified by ozone from bacteria, viruses, and other infectious agents. This principle is also used in the treatment of viral infections (15).

In the body, ozone acts in many ways (16). If it encounters viruses in a free state, it destroys them. If the virus is in the cell, ozone creates the conditions for its destruction by the cell itself. It protects healthy cells from the penetration of the virus into it.

Similarly, ozone acts on the hepatitis virus. It is effective for any type of virus: A, B or C. Ozone therapy gives the same results as treatment with modern drugs, only tolerated by patients much easier, and is several times cheaper (17). Repeated courses of ozone therapy protect against the development of complications of hepatitis – cirrhosis and liver cancer. There is evidence that ozone therapy can be effectively used in Covid-19. Scientists resumed that systemic ozone therapy seems useful in controlling inflammation, stimulating immunity and as antiviral activity, and providing protection from acute coronary syndromes and ischemia-reperfusion damage, thus suggesting a new methodology of immune therapy. So, systemic ozone therapy in combination with antivirals in Covid-19-positive patients may be justified, helpful, and synergic (18).

Ozone cosmetology

When the oxygen resource is distributed, the skin receives oxygen last, even though the skin is the first to absorb all the shocks of the environment. Normally it is 1-2%, in conditions of deficit – even less. Ozone therapy eliminates oxygen deficiency by saturating the “suffocating” skin with oxygen. In dermato cosmetology, ozone therapy is an indispensable method of correcting acne, it is able to smooth out wrinkles, helps in the treatment of psoriasis (19). With cellulite, ozone helps to convert fat into a water-soluble form, destroys sclerosed membranes, eliminates fat deposits, allows to correct the figure.

Ozone therapy is widely used in solving problems such as:

Side effects and contraindications to the use of ozone therapy

Ozone therapy is a safe procedure with minimal side effects, but sometimes they can be observed. For example, increased blood circulation can cause short-term headaches and dizziness, sometimes leg cramps. To avoid these unpleasant consequences, it is important to follow all the doctor’s recommendations.

Also, like any medical procedure, ozone therapy has several absolute and relative contraindications (20). Absolute contraindications are:

And among the relative contraindications are high or too low blood pressure and difficult venous access.

Benefits of ozone therapy

We can conclude that the effects of ozone have a long list of positive health effects. It destroys pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, reduces acute and chronic inflammation, saturates the blood with oxygen, has a beneficial effect on blood circulation in the capillaries, and relieves inflammation by improving blood supply. Ozone therapy accelerates the excretion of toxic substances from the body, improves metabolic processes, stimulates the immune system and relaxes muscles and nerve endings relieves pain.

This way, ozone therapy is a safe and highly effective method of treatment that has a positive complex effect on the body with almost no side effects. The therapeutic effect of ozone therapy is explained by the activation of metabolic processes in cells and tissues, stimulation of immune defence systems, and normalization of redox reactions. The use of ozone therapy allows you to get a faster effect from treatment, reduce the dose of drugs, the frequency of side effects, and improve the duration and quality of life.
